The Power of Being in the Right Room

Many successful business stories begin with a single connection.

For Andy, one of those connections led to a major recruitment project that helped move thousands of workers across Europe.

But it wasn't luck that created the opportunity.

"I did about 70 calls to get Austin to answer my phone call. That was about average back then."

While networking remains important, Andy believes persistence and consistent follow-up are what truly build strong business relationships.

Success often comes from showing up repeatedly, building trust and being willing to put in the work when others give up.

Why Business Growth Requires Constant Learning

Starting a business is one challenge. Growing it is another.

Throughout the conversation, Andy reflected on the lessons learned while expanding operations from Estonia into Poland, one of Europe's most competitive markets.

As markets become larger and more complex, businesses need to evolve their approach.

Processes matter. Relationships matter. Understanding how organisations buy services matters.

"Without understanding how purchasing works, it's quite hard to run a business."

Many entrepreneurs focus heavily on sales and marketing. However, understanding procurement, decision-making processes and customer expectations can often make the difference between winning and losing opportunities.

AI Is Changing Business Faster Than Ever

Like many business leaders, Andy sees AI as one of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing organisations today.

From recruitment and journalism to content creation and customer engagement, AI is already transforming how businesses operate.

The key is not simply adopting AI, but using it responsibly.

Andy shared examples of how different AI tools are being used for different purposes across his businesses, while also highlighting the importance of governance and oversight.

"It's not just about using AI. You have to have an AI policy. You have to have AI governance."

As AI adoption accelerates, businesses need to think carefully about ownership, accountability and how technology fits into their wider strategy.

Leadership Changes as Businesses Grow

One of the most powerful parts of the conversation focused on leadership.

Many founders excel at launching and scaling businesses. But as organisations grow, leadership requirements often change.

Andy believes one of the biggest challenges for entrepreneurs is recognising when the business needs something different.

"CEOs need to know when to step aside."

As teams grow, culture becomes increasingly important. Strong cultures are not created by leadership alone. They are shaped by employees, customers, values and shared experiences.

The role of leadership is often less about controlling culture and more about creating an environment where the right culture can thrive.

Why Culture Matters More Than Ever

In a competitive market, attracting and retaining talented people is critical.

Andy shared his pride in maintaining staff turnover significantly below industry averages, crediting company culture rather than management processes alone.

"The culture of the company takes the credit for that."

People want more than a salary.

They want purpose, development opportunities, stability and a workplace where they feel valued.

Businesses that invest in culture are often the businesses that achieve sustainable long-term growth.

Looking Ahead: A Different Future for Ownership

As the conversation came to a close, Andy shared his vision for the future.

Rather than focusing solely on growth or exit strategies, he believes employee ownership models will become increasingly important.

With AI, automation and emerging technologies continuing to reshape the workplace, businesses may need to rethink traditional ideas of ownership and leadership.

"You won't be able to own your employees like you do today. You need to be a partner with them."

It is a bold prediction, but one that reflects a broader shift towards collaboration, transparency and shared success.

Conclusion

From recruitment and networking to AI and leadership, one theme remained consistent throughout the discussion: business is ultimately about people.

Technology will continue to evolve. Markets will continue to change.

But organisations that build strong relationships, create healthy cultures and remain adaptable will always have an advantage.

The future may look very different, but the importance of connection, trust and continuous learning remains exactly the same.
