The regional GDP per capita in several regions in Poland put some of the country’s voidvodships among the poorest in the European Union, new statistics show.
The Lubelskie region in eastern Poland had the 13th lowest GDP per capita in the EU, in the ranking prepared by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office.
The Polish region generated just 47 percent of the EU average, and tied with the Southern Great Plain, Dél-Alföld, region in Hungary. Other Polish regions in the bottom of the ranking were the Swiętokrzyskie region in southern Poland and Podlaskie in the northeast (49 percent of the EU average), as well as Warmińsko Mazurskie and Podkarpackie (both 48 percent). The Eurostat report said that there were 21 regions in the EU which had a GDP per capita below the EU average. These included five each in Bulgaria, Poland and Romania, four in Hungary, and one each in Greece and France.
