If you have decided to start your own home-based business but feel a little overwhelmed by the idea and don't know where to start, here we have outlined the first three key steps to help you out.

    Find Your Talents and Skills

The first step is coming up with that brilliant business idea. This step will not be a challenge for some people, but a little inspiration will probably be needed for others. The ideal option is to tap into the talents and skills you have already developed for your home business. If you are inherently creative and good with your hands, there may be a potential to turn this talent into a successful home business. For example, creating decoration objects for the home, jewellery, or clothing.

Some popular and easy-to-implement home business ideas include becoming a podcaster, web developer, programmer, virtual assistant, blogger or content creator. If you are confident that you have settled on the right home business idea, you will still need to understand that it has the potential to make a living. Do research to ensure that the competition is not too big and that there are enough potential customers, or that you can offer something unique or expert that sets you apart.

Dedicated Space for Your Home Business

Whether you are setting up a home business selling products that require space for storage and packing, or you simply require a laptop to write a blog, you will need a dedicated space for your home business. If you already own your own home, find a space that you can devote exclusively to your home business, whether it is a space in the corner of your kitchen or converting your spare room into an office.

If you do not yet own your own property, before setting up your home business, seek some mortgage advice from a broker, such as Trussle. They can talk you through what is required to get on the property ladder and help you navigate the timing of your home purchase. Keep in mind that once you become self-employed, it will realistically take about two years before you are eligible to apply for a mortgage, so applying while you still have your nine to five might be the best opinion. Remember that you will also likely need to register your home address as your registered company office.

    Create a Business Plan

Building a business plan is key to the success of any business. It allows you to structure your project and ensure that it is viable in the long term. A well-thought-out business plan should include your overview, marketing strategy, objectives and how to reach them, your product, how you intend to deliver, and of course, your goals.

Creating a virtual identity is vital to your business plan in our digital age. Whatever the nature of your business, it is always a good idea to make your company unique and recognisable to stand out from the competition, which involves creating an online identity.
